Belarus backs Russia on missiles

Belarus says it is ready to "play its role" as a Russian ally if the US overrides Moscow's objections and creates new missile bases in Europe.

Russia has warned it may place missiles in Belarus to counter US plans for bases in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko praised ties with Russia as he hosted President Vladimir Putin in Minsk.

We wonder if anyone - with an IQ of even just double digits - will be at all surprised?

"Belarus is ready to play its role in the issues of the planned deployment in Europe of US missile defence systems," Mr Lukashenko said.

He did not specify what this role would be.

Last month, a senior Russian general said his country may place missiles in Belarus to counter US plans for bases in central Europe.

The US says it plans to build a missile defence system by building bases in the Czech Republic and Poland that could help intercept missiles fired from countries such as Iran.

Russia has however dismissed the alleged threat from Iran and said the US is targeting its territory.

Oh, dear. We wonder what would make Russia (and Belarus and many more completely comprehending countries), mistrust old Uncle Sam so much? Eh?

US might delay missile defense

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - The Bush administration has told Moscow it may delay activation of a proposed U.S. missile defense system in Europe until it has "definitive proof" that Iran poses a missile threat, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday.

A senior Russian official repeated the Kremlin view that the U.S. misreads Iran's missile potential. And in Washington, President Bush asserted that a U.S.-linked missile defense system is urgently needed in Europe, illustrating the depth of the divide between former Cold War adversaries.

"We need to take it seriously — now," Bush said of the possibility Iran will gain the ability to attack Europe.

Russians test [another] ballistic missile

Russia has successfully tested a new, sea-based ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine, officials have said.

The weapon, capable of breaching anti-missile defence systems, flew almost the whole length of the country.

US plans to build a missile defence shield in Europe have angered Russia, which sees the proposal as a challenge to its influence in the region.

The Russian test comes as President Vladimir Putin heads for the US to meet President George W Bush on Sunday.

US Missiles In Eastern Europe: Will Putin Put Up With Much More?

Many among us can quite clearly recall that not so long ago George W. Bush confidently claimed to have looked into Vladimir Putin's eyes - and that at that moment he had seen the Russian president's very soul.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that US plans to build a missile defence system in eastern Europe would raise the risk of "mutual destruction".
