As Bush sows, so others reap ...

To claim the current Bush maladministration could be personaly blamed for the hurricane that has brought so much death, deprivation and destruction to New Orleans would obviously be way over the top.

Even bearing in mind how he and his henchmen have repeatedly refused to accept the virtual tidal wave of findings of most of the world's experts on global warming - and it's catastrophic, coming climate-change consequences.

However, to imply that he and his insanely, indifferent and ignorant ilk are absolutely and entirely responsible for the following, as written up by Will Bunch for America's oldest journal covering the newspaper industry - Editor and Publisher - is unquestionably, undeniably, utterly unarguably, accurate.

Here's the article's header.

Did New Orleans Catastrophe Have to Happen?

'Times-Picayune' Had
Repeatedly Raised Federal Spending Issues

By Will Bunch Published:
August 31, 2005 9:00 PM ET
Shocked and saddened as some may well be to see such a story, should anyone be really surprised? After all, the Bush oil-war wouldn't be able to continue if a constant flow of 'oh so easily' sequestrated US citizens' tax dollars wasn't readily available for such outright, astonishing abuse.

I mean, ask yourself the questions. If the needless and illegal Iraq war and subsequent occupation hadn't been engineered and implemented on the basis of a tissue of lies -- could Carlyle & Co be continuing to 'coin it' for the crooked crony-cabal in charge?

How otherwise could Cheney's Halliburton honchos have hoped to help themselves - almost effortlessly - to so many mega-millions of dollars as their cut of this putrid war-profiteering plot?

What else could have provide such super, platinum plated opportunities for the good ole' oil-boys to grow so much bigger, fatter, uglier and richer - at such supersonic speed?

For the umpteenth dozenth time most of the world wonders, as one, where the average American's outrage is. Because surely there can never have been a time in their - once justifiably proud - nation's history when apparently, absolute unaccountability went so unaccountably unchallenged.

Read this and rage.

Newhouse News Service, in an article posted late Tuesday night at The Times-Picayune Web site, reported: "No one can say they didn't see it coming.

... Now in the wake of one of the worst storms ever, serious questions are being asked about the lack of preparation."

In early 2004, as the cost of the conflict in Iraq soared, President Bush proposed spending less than 20 percent of what the Corps said was needed for Lake Pontchartrain, according to a Feb. 16, 2004, article, in New Orleans City Business.

Then read on and rage again.

On June 8, 2004, Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; told the Times-Picayune: "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq ...

Nobody locally is happy that the levees can't be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us."

Also that June, with the 2004 hurricane season starting, the Corps' project manager Al Naomi went before a local agency, the East Jefferson Levee Authority, and essentially begged for $2 million for urgent work that Washington was now unable to pay for.
What kind of a compassionate conservative crew is it - that actively orchestrates and oversees such a shameless, sickening shambles?

That particular question is rhetorical of course.

The actual answers to the rapidly rising numbers of real and present problems presenting themselves to the vast majority of decent living, law abiding, honest hardworking and ever more alarmed Americans - must be extracted from their philistine, phony politicos - by themselves alone.

More than enough poor innocents both inside and outside the US have already suffered more than enough - in more than enough different ways. So heaven forbid that another horrendous hurricane hits anywhere else on the Southern coast in the foreseeable future.

If it did - then surely it's a certainty that the current crappy crew couldn't possibly hope to cope.

Can -- nay, are -- the American people prepared to bet otherwise; quite possibly staking their very lives ?

Glad you are back Richard and I hope feeling better. I don't blame the Bush administration for the hurricane but I do hold them accountable for the utter chaos that is presently occuring. I have been watching CNN as I am sure you all have and are appalled. CNN are talking about thousands of refugees. Of course the poor, elderly and disabled are suffering the most. It's all very well to send out a message for mass evacuation but to where and with what. Don't get me started on the stories of looting. If I hadn't eaten in 2/3 days I would be not accountable for my actions. These people have nothing and I don't see the federal government dashing in to give them much hope. Homewowners will get more assistance via FEMA loans and insurance. Stories abound on the web about the total unpreparedness of the authorities. Huffington post and salon have featured good articles. The National Guard (who would normally fill in at such time) are in Iraq. Of course the mainstream press is muffled here - look at an article in today's Sydney Morning Herald for survivor accounts. To be sure the Vacationer in Chief left Crawford two days earlier than planned to get out of the hurricane's path but not before he gave a speech in San Diego to veteran's groups comparing the Iraq War to WWII. Of course, the devastation in New Orleans took precedence over the Iraqi stampede story - 1000 dead and didn't that happen on our watch!

graniab, I'm feeling much better now, thanks. Well, toothache wise at any rate. What's happened in the US and Iraq though, is nothing short of agonising. And yes, the world is watching with you - and is equally appalled - believe me.

simpchimp, likewise. Nobody can witness this travesty and not be sickened.

The Bush cabal controls all aspects of government rigidly, with destruction for those that go off the reservation. They control the media, and with them the minds of the majority ot those most easily motivated to vote (in favor or Bushism).

As an American, I can only hope that my following thought will be answered: The globe knows better, and the globe knows how to help the globe right itself, else the globe is doomed.

It is stupendously obvious that America cannot help itself.

Richard,
This is like another 9/11 almost. Lots of reasons for the flooding - but NO EXCUSE for not having an evacuation plan.

George W. Bush does not give a HOOT about this situation.

I've worked for big companies in the past when a terrible CEO was at the helm. Inevitably, the place deteriorates, politics trumps every other consideration, people that can quit, do so.

That is EXACTLY what I am seeing here - HORRIBLE management.

These fools are in government to rape it. Period.

For the 1st time in 15 years I am seeing reporters on Fox, MSNBC, CBS, etc correct and scrutinize government officials when they try to soften and downplay this (Can you believe they are doing this, as though we are not seeing what we are seeing?). The people you are seeing were poor or middle class and didn't have the means to check into a hotel at 100 a night (that is what the demand did, even really cheap hotels in safety zones were charging that) for God only knows how long.

Even journalist that normally repeat all of the obvious lies with a straight face aren't doing it and are being critical and calling them on the BS. How far this will go, I do not know, but I pray it goes ALL the way. This government is so corrupt on every side and their cut backs on a known problem (rated number 3 the walls in NO to the security of America by a FEMA and Corps report)stealing our men away and money and helicopters, etc, etc, etc for this illegal war.

I haven't met a soul that isn't haunted by this and the inability to do anything. Many red eyed people I am seeing. MY brother in laws son, ex-wife, parents, aunts, uncles are all missing in LA.

I am glad you are feeling better Richard :) I pray this unneccessry suffering (we look like a 3rd world nation, because we are, the resources are gone) and deaths will at least serve a purpose in the core in America. Please let not one of these deaths count for naught and America wakes up!

At least a dozen countries have offered substantial financial help as well as "hands-on" assistance.

I cried when I heard so many countries were generously offering so much help.

We know most of them distrust, even hate, our government much more now than they did after 9/11, and we know they know that for the most part, their gifts will be funnelled through the very government that they distrust. But they are making those gifts anyway.

We don't deserve it.

The very first offer that I heard about was from the city of Vancouver BC. Their crack Search and Rescue team was organized, equipped and airborne within 24 hours on its way to New Orleans. Their plane got turned back at the U.S. border by Homeland Security!

I strongly suspect someone thought we could hide our own incompetence and lack of preparedness if we could keep those "foreigners" from seeing it. (a similar offer from Russia was also refused). I guess we will take cash, but not prying eyes.

I am ashamed.

We all need to try harder to distinguish between an administration's policies and the people of a nation. Hugo Chavez seems to understand this distinction. He was very quick to offer some form of assistance despite the Whitehouse's obvious animosity towards him (not to mention Pat Roberton's). Any other nation that has offered aid is simply acting in accordance with basic decency to help people in need (if you were in charge, wouldn't you do the same?). I see no reason to feel shame. I didn't vote for Bush. I also understand that those who did vote for Bush, weren't voting in favor of letting poor folk in New Orleans drown. Even some of Bush's political allies are kind of giving him that sidelong, "dude... seriously" look. Don't feel ashamed, Rosemary. We may have lost a couple of rounds and allowed the knuckleheads more power than is healthy, but the game is not over.

"Our" government officials won't even allow that, let alone the much appreciated (when people find out all of the truths and offers made by foreign nations they will be sick)but not known and much needed offers of airlifts from many nations.

From Ezra Klein today:

". . .Bush, of course, has been this strange mixture of government growth and administrative incompetence, almost as if he's running a kamikaze mission to prove the Republican case against government. But conservatives, generally, are all for the private market and individual charity. If Bush really was so uncomfortable with government involvement, he could still do a bang-up job relying on his church/industry connections to create a parallel and powerful rescue effort. The government could take care of the basics, but the private and theological spheres could provide much of the material, cash, and space. In doing, Bush would help discredit Big Government and legitimize the conservative philosophy.

He hasn't. And that he's hasn't demonstrates his basic absence of a driving ideology. He's neither able to effectively deploy government or call on his friends outside of it. He's just incompetent, as I said before, a small man in a big office. He speaks the language of small government conservatism because it gets him elected, pushes big government solutions because they prove easiest, but is so separated and uninterested in the whole enterprise that the result is a wreck of incoherence and unexpected outcomes. So when something like Katrina comes around, he's neither creative enough to deal with it in an innovative way or competent enough to deal with it in the old way. So he just doesn't really deal with it."

Many MSM outlets, especially MSNBC.com are actually asking and reporting hard questions.

The Red Cross, press, and many organizations are being refused entry to areas, from what I am hearing from independant net sources that tend to be good. What are they hiding? Even most of the satelite pics are unaccessible still. Not wanting to be an alarmist, but I am afraid the death toll is much bigger than is being guessed at. Most of the real help people are receiving is coming from private citizens that manage to get through and small churches. Transferring some (and it is only a small percentage being moved, when you look at the population for that region) people from one hell hole to another is not help.

I still have hope something good will come out of this nightmare.

The World is watching and many Americans are finally taking their blinders off in embarrassment and disapair from what I am seeing here in KY.

This is also another place the money went. Another thing almost everyone of those illegal settlers got at least $250K each from the US government. MY government has never given me anything. Do you think it'll do it for these people in LA< AL, and MS. I think their actions so far tell you what the citizens of this country will get.

And $500 million went to build a bridge in Alaska for a town of 50 people.....They've just altered the laws on drilling up there.

But they couldn't find the needed money that the Corps has been warning about and take 5 days to respond to their citiznes plea for help. There are still tons of towns in Southern MS, LA, and AL that no one has been to.

Oh, I doubt they are making up the numbers... but I'm sure they are skewing them the way they want them to go by harvesting them in very carefully selected areas or using any one of a thousand and one other little techniques to make them come out the way you want them to. Polls are like statistics in that sense, there are just too many legitimate to futz with the numbers without doing something as clumsy and inelegant as making them up. That's why you have to be really careful about what polls you choose to believe and to put stock in.
