Real American, Charles Freeman, asks why real Americans aren't allowed to be just real Americans any more

Scarcely have we seen 'straight talk' statements such as this spoken by an American : a 'real' American that is.

(Incidentally, huge heads-up hat-tip to fellow Brit blogger
'Gert ' for this.)

First, just some small snippets from Charles Freeman's recent personal statement:

The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.

There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government – in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.

The outrageous agitation that followed the leak of my pending appointment will be seen by many to raise serious questions about whether the Obama administration will be able to make its own decisions about the Middle East and related issues. I regret that my willingness to serve the new administration has ended by casting doubt on its ability to consider, let alone decide what policies might best serve the interests of the United States rather than those of a Lobby intent on enforcing the will and interests of a foreign government.

Now read Chas Freeman's full personal statement.

Now, be your very own court, prosecutor, defender, jury and judge.

We realise of course that's it's simply stupidity of the silliest sort to even venture to suggest that anyone should ever act as one's own executioner, as well : nevertheless .....

This 'real' old Brit's just saying.....

I never had any allusions of Obama being any different then Bush or any other President before him, when it comes to Middle East.... Same old same old.... :)

However, I am quite surprised and taken back by the honesty of Mr. Freeman who is probably of Jewish ancestor himself... I guess he is a true American and does not let his ethnicity/religion effect his views, which is very rare to see in politics....!

I congratulate him for his straight talk. :)

Rick, so surprise, surprise. Not.

Thanks for giving this story some extra coloumn inches as they say.

One day the yanks are going to wake up and find it's too late. Fat lot of good all their military hardware is worth when America's real enenmy lays within.

I mean, it's not like it'll be the first time they've been suckered. Not the second time either. Probably not the last time either.

Also, I hope you and whoever else it is that's concerned gets a result regarding mad Paddy who posted in the other thread.

Richard your link to the statement is not going through...

Does one realise that Obama appointed an Israeli lobbyist as his Cheif Of Staff.

Rahm Emanuel was a volunteer in the Israeli occupation forces in 1991, he holds dual citizenship and considers himself an Israeli firs and his father Benjamin is a former member of Irgun (Zionist terrorist group)

That Chas Freeman has stood down due to the Israel lobby (that they have just reported doesnt exist..lol) is no surprise...

I just did a post on the amount of money Israel is being sponsored by America, Obama has just ok'd $30billion over 10 years! Flippin brilliant, non-existent lobby group!

Thanks for linking, Richard.

There's a bit more to this story than meets the eye: it's causing a bit of shit storm over there, with the Israel Lobby finding itself rather exposed on this one. The bad news is that it appears it's Obama who withdrew his man (Freeman), so he folded to the Lobby's pressure. W/o 'breaking' the lobby, forget about solving the I-P question...
