Russia has delivered new anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran and will consider further requests by Tehran for defensive weapons, the Reuters news agency quoted Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov as saying on Tuesday.

“We have supplied the modern short-range anti-aircraft systems TOR-M1 in accordance with our contracts,” Ivanov told reporters “Iran is not under sanctions and if it wants to buy defensive ... equipment for its armed forces then why not?”

So, like he man said:"Why not?"

Everyone's doing it - and I do mean EVERYONE.

Look at this.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. military has sold forbidden equipment at least a half-dozen times to middlemen for countries - including Iran and China - who exploited security flaws in the Defense Department's surplus auctions. The sales include fighter jet parts and missile components.

In one case, federal investigators said, the contraband made it to Iran, a country President Bush branded part of an "axis of evil."

Escalation Against Iran

The Pieces Are Being Put in Place

By Col. Sam Gardner

Personally, I think the array of armaments pointed at Iran is to convince them not to come to the defence of Lebanon and Syria which will be attacked next month.
Israel and US will make it as much a surprise as possible. Notice all the attention given to Iran now and little to Syria. Look, look, .. over there...!

Of course, Iran will be attacked anyway under this scenario once Istrael and US have turned Syria into chaos thereby making them unable to help Iran.

Israel will not attack Iran while ever Syria and Hizbullah can retaliate with ease. So they must be taken out first.

Israel tried to start this last year and failed much to the Neo-cons consternation. The only reason Olmert would have been left in power is if he had promised faithfully to do it again but this time succeed

Russia may do more than sell and ship arms to Iran, if Iran gets directly attacked by both the U.S. and Israel.

I certainly expect them to do something decisive. I haven't ruled out some decisive moves in the financial markets by China either.

We seem to be rapidly moving toward total war in the region. Bush wants to leave a legacy. Some legacy this would be!!! Whoopee!

But he's got to hurry. He's only got two more years (unless he decides to pull an FDR and get a 3rd term because of the War).

I worry about total war spreading much further than 'the region' Rosemary.

The lunatics have now so obviously taken over the asylum.

Hi Richard,

I was expecting from you a post on MI6 refusal to back Blair's claims that the inquiry into the corruption involving the BAE UK arms firm and the saudis had to be stopped because it was damaging national security. It seems that MI6 didn't want to back Balir's lies this time around as they did for the justification of the Iraq war...

You have to admit, the Russians have a point. There are no UN sanctions, and the weapons are defensive.

The Russians have have shown 2 things in the past couple of years:

1) They don't want Iran to acquire the capability to make nuclear weapons.

2) They'd rather have an independent, nuclear Iran than allow the US to achieve hegemony in the Middle East. And they'd rather have an independent, nuclear Iran than allow the US invade a country that sits just across the Caspian Sea.

If Bushco's real goal had been a non-nuclear Iran, they would have just gotten out of the way while Putin negotiated with Iran. But since the real goal was to force a confrontation, Bushco sabotaged those negotiations.

And now, not surprisingly, Putin has responded by making things difficult for the Bush administration.

I think we all agree we are undoubtedly being misled.

(misleading the American public is a specialty of BushCo and it has worked well, very well)

We've now watched BushCo eliminate all the "wise heads" in both the Pentagon and the State Department, so there is no question Wisdom is on the side of Russia, China and Iran.

And these 3 countries also have mutual defense pacts as well as mutual trade interests -- Oil producers like Iran need markets just as much as big oil consumers like China need suppliers -- and China holds a financial sword over America's economy because of all the American Treasury instruments it holds and could dump on the world market whenever it chooses to do so.

bluey, This may not be enough to stop the "shootout at the OK Corral" (that Bush and Israel are salivating for) in Lebanon and Syria, but it may be enough to prevent a wider war.

Russians believe their nation orginated with the Magog of the Persian Gog
who Alexander the Great chased up mountains where they remained for
centuries. What is remarkable is how the Russians are proud of the Magog
[Obolensky ISBN 0-913836-98-2 p238-41] while the rest of the world sees them
with apocalyptic horror. The German foreign minister of Russia, Nesselrode,
sent a bishop, Uspesnky, to get the Christians of the midEast to abandon
their traditional languages for Arabic out of hope of generating an Arabic
uprising against the Turks. A century later, one such Christian, Michel
Aflaq, founded the Saddam Assad Ba'ath party. Since ancient times, the
Russian ideology has been to assimilate everyone into the obshchina commune
of their mother earth, Mokosh, who they sacrificed to even when Lenin was
born. It is worth noting that both Iran and North Korea border Russia.
