A New Cold War?

The Russian newspaper Izvestia reported today that Russia may respond to Bush's Eastern European missile defense system by deploying nuclear bombers in Cuba.

The US responded with a
statement by General Norton Schwartz, Air Force chief of staff nominee. Schwartz stated that such a deployment would be "something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America."

I thought that Andy Young's take on the situation
sounded about right. According to Young, the Russians are probably just posturing for the sake of domestic politics, and we probably won't be seeing a Russian airbase in Cuba. But I disagree with his assertion that the Russians might build an airbase in Venezuela. Unlike a Cuban base, a Venezuelan base couldn't be justified by linking its construction to the missile site. And it's very hard to see how such a base would do anything for the Chavez government, beyond giving the US a pretext for another coup d'etat.

When it's your aim to keep the population compliant you need to scare them, and keep them scared. There's always GOT to be a bogeyman. So why settle for one (Muslims) ... when you can have two? The Muslims AND the Russians.

Considering the Americans see themselves as so big and so tough, it never ceases to amaze me what a sad, frightened lot of small children they are ... with some exceptions, obviously. The majority seem to be permanently frightened of their own shadows.

Anonymous - it's why they all insist on keeping guns under the bed. Once in a while, like little children, they take them out and play with them for a while.

The Northern wind brings snow and ice
Humans starve and freeze
The Fimbulwinter has arrived
And soon the world will cease to be

Brother will be brother's bane
No one shall be spared
All will die, none remain
That is mankind's share

The southern sphere is set ablaze
Muspel's fire is set free
The sun is on its final chase
And soon the world will cease to be

Across the western sky he runs
A wolf so grim and mean
Devours the eternal sun
And soon the world will cease to be

The North Star falls from the sky
Into the deep cold sea
The first of all to fall and die
And soon the world will cease to be

Muspel's flames lick the sky
Hidhægg eats the dead
The Æsir meet in hall up high
And Oden 'quests Mimer's head

Land is swallowed by the waves
Rocks and mountains break
Dead men on the path to Hell
And Yggdrasil quakes

[Lead Mikkonnen]

From the East comes a ship
Loke holds the oar
A demon army with swords that rip
Will join the final war

The army of the dead arrives
Heimdal blows his horn
Calling Gods out to die
Before the world can be reborn

Try's about as sensible and relevant.

Mary had a little lamb
it's feet were white as snow

And everywhere that Mary went
the lamb was sure to go.

Yeah you're right I forgot that humanity will perish not in Ragnarök but in a war against its own technology which it will eventually lose. The renewed hostility between superpowers ... they were too dumb to learn from the first time ... is definitely a sign of things to come.

Anon 2 - Wake up and pay attention!

It has nothing to do with psychics or trances (except the one you seem to be in, perhaps), but the state of the world as it is now.

If you can tear yourself away from the cartoons for long enough, go and peruse these websites, which will also lead you to yet more websites, all of which might actually give you pause for thought:
