Is Syria Already Set In U.S. & U.K. Sights ?

Ignoring in the first instance the insane, the imbecilic, the infantile, the illiterate, the ill informed, the stupid, and the senile -- who among us ever believed that Condoleza Rice was [as claimed] simply showing Jack Straw some Southern hospitality, when he took off to travel from the UK to the US earlier this week and took up her so called, cordial invitation to 'come calling' ?

Well now we know that those of us who sniffed the whiff of some trouble & strife being stirred up for someone, were bang on the button.

And that 'someone' it seems, is -- surprise, surprise -- yet one more of Israel's near neighbours; President Bashar al-Assadd's, Syria.

Sound sort of a 'same old, same old' scenario to anyone else besides This Old Brit ?

Then put aside a little time to peruse this particular piece from today's Sunday Mirror.

Here's the dateline, headline and by-line.

U.S. and UK urge action against Syria over Hariri murder

By Lin Noueihed

BEIRUT (Reuters)
Uh, oh! Sound ever so faintly familiar ? It should do.

As the rabid Donald Rumsfeld once infamously informed us all - to paraphrase - "shit happens".

But first, it needs to be stirred. Eh ?

Here's some more from the Mirror.

The United States and Britain ratcheted up pressure on Syria on Sunday, saying a U.N. probe implicating it in the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri was "very serious" and the world must act.
Act?

Hah. That's apt.

The crooked cabals currently controlling both the UK and US governments are past masters at 'acting'. As should be expected of course, since they've been posing and playing the parts of proper politicians for a rather prolonged period -- and succeeding [so far] in pulling way too much wool over far too many folk's eyes.

In fact they've gradually gotten so good at playing their respective, repulsive and revolting roles that they've even managed to outperform the 'old pro' himself -- rambling, old Ronald Reagan.

But let's get back to the present for a peek at our possibly mutual future -- to coin another new Old Brit phrase.

Eh, what ?

Righty, ho!
And tally, ho!
So onward we jolly-well go.
"I am quite sure that when the international community gets together we will decide what to do but it can't be ... just left lying on the table," Rice said.
Then she added, rather overtly ominously.
"This really has to be dealt with."

Jesus. Just look at that last line.

Then look at this.

Straw, who has been touring Alabama with Rice, said: "The report indicates that people of a high level of this Syrian regime were implicated."

He added: "We also have evidence from the ... report of false testimony being given by senior people in the regime.

This is very serious."

Ahem. Again, look at the last line.

Damned right, Jack. It is very serious.

Many, may even say stark staring, stupe-effing-fyingly so. Whilst simultaneously wondering -- whether or not this scary 'shoulder-to-shoulder' dynamic duo, definitely share some sort of dual, weirdo death wish?

But even if it's true, why in the name of all that's sane should they settle on such a sick, sick, sick one ?

I mean -- actively and voluntarily seeking to sodding stretttttttttch ourselves to death?

Now, look to this link to learn more.

Finally, having finished reading Richard's most recent report - it's for you to decide for yourself; are these sleazey, slimey serial liars now trying to sell us - still more war ?

kiwi and xpatyank,

Sorry guys, he says he's and Anglican - Episcopalian -- whatever that means. I only know about ordinary Anglicans [Church of England] - of which I'm a long time, lapsed one.

(Btw, don't take that to mean I'm anything like an atheist/pagan/heathen/whatever. I'm agnostic - for now.)

Perhaps the real reason for Tony Blair's claim that the Iranians are supplying a new type of bomb, designed by the British security services according to the Independent, to insurgents in the south of Iraq is becoming clearer. It is that the British Army is insufficiently equipped with suitable armoured fighting vehicles. It appears, from this article in the Sunday Telegraph, that the men who died were in armoured Land Rovers. While these will, I believe, resist bullets from assault rifles, they are not resistant to shaped charges such as RPGs or the new-style roadside bombs. To avoid questions about why British soldiers are using such unsuitable vehicles in a war zone, the government came up with the story about Iranians. While the British public tolerate Blair's involvement in Iraq, they would probably not tolerate it if they knew that the 'best' was not being done for 'our boys' out there.
A bit of technical history: Towards the end of the last world war, the allied armies (Russian, American and British) lost large numbers of armoured vehicles to German tank-killer teams equipped with the Panzerfaust, the first effective RPG. As a result, the British developed Chobham armour which includes a ceramic layer. The ceramic layer 'resists' the effect of the 'plasma' jet produced by a shaped charge, thus rendering AFVs, such as the Warrior APC and Challenger tank, fitted with Chobham armour largely impervious to shaped-charge weapons. That was one of the things that puzzled me about the reports about shaped-charge IEDs. BTW, the Israeli Merkava tank does not have Chobham armour which might explain why Hezbollah were able to persuade Israel to quit Lebanon with their infamous shaped-charge IEDs.

Hi Richard,

My last comment here for a while. Not sure whether they're trying for "regime change" in Syria or not.

Rationally I'd say "no" a weakened Assad would suit them (and Israel) far better. The IED could be in Damascus in the morning if they chose. Not that the Syrians aren't good soldiers but they've been starved of modern equipment for a long time.

The problem is though that whoever does enter Damascus would be faced with exactly the same sort of thing that made the Israelis quit Lebanon.

Moreover the opposition to Assad's government in Syria is Islamic and very fundamentalist Islamic at that.

Rationality 'though isn't this Dubya's or Neville Poodleblairs long suit.

As to Straw AFAIK he's the son of converts as if that makes any diff. He does or at any rate did have a good record against both anti-judaism and islamophobia.

My son has promised to pop in here from time to time and save any postings he thinks I'll be especially interested in. So be good or you'll have my teenage puritan after you !!!!

Family joke - hope to God he doesn't read this. No on second thoughts I do hope he reads this. Have a hug Dubhaltach.

:-))))))))))))

You take care Richard.

blowback,

While I can't [so won't even] pretend to have half of your technical knowledge - I DO know that you're right about British squaddies being kitted-out/ armed/ protected/ backed up - call it what you will. BlairCo want to please Bushco but, they want to do it 'on the cheap'.

Sometime soon, something's got to give. One way or another, a last straw of some kind [no pun intended] will break this particular 'camel's' back -- troops-dying-needlessly-wise in Iraq, I mean.

I can't really believe the US is setting itself up for another skirmish. I think another Old Brit team member mentioned 'sabre rattling'. The White house has enuf to handle at the moment with CIA Plamegate scandal. Dear God we could get indictments this week w/major aides exiting. Please Please Please let it happen. However, Tone's 'me too attitude' is baffling.

Off to Helsinki then Mark?

Bush himself is now 'ramping it up' against Syria

Bush increases pressure on Syria

Tens of thousands of Syrians held a protest against the UN report
US President George Bush has said using force against Syria would be a "last resort" in the dispute over its alleged role in the death of Rafik Hariri.

Regarding Iran and in particular Syria, I find myself rather agreeing to graniab: I doubt if the US/UK will find the political and military will to carry out their threats.

But even surgical strikes, rather than full out military action, would be disastrous, especially if Iraq starts to stabilise. That's far from certain but there does seem to be some movement in the right direction. Any more military action of whatever kind would make the coalition lose all (two!) credits....

Well excuse me Dubhaltach I have no idea what your father does except that he was, at some point, in the Irish army and was a UN peacekeeper in the Middle East and that he is a very knowledgable about the Middle East. If you look over various posts you will see that I was under the impression that your father was in Helsinki and not in Copenhagen until Richard (this Old Brit) put me right some joking around on this issue followed suit. Being both the granddaughter and daughter of soldiers I can appreciate that this is a very difficult time for you and your family. I had no idea where your father was shipping out to - or in what capacity but now I have a good idea. However I do take exception to your comment about 'my land's greedy rascist war'. The restrained shy Dublin woman in me responds - amadan I am Irish, went to Muckross Park and graduated from UCD at Belfield, and yes I now live in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is news to me that Ireland is involved in Iraq if I am wrong please enlighten me. However, I am not surprised by your comments, I have an 18 year old daughter who is every bit as 'sharp tongued and in your face' as you appear. - TEll your Dad to take care and duck - Grania Brigid Duffy

Whooooaaah, there. Slow down, young Dubhaltach.

The only "joke" graniab made was a self effacing one. As she said, look over a few more posts before you jump to the wrong conclusions.

graniab, was referinng to her own [self confessed] European geography shortcomings.

You dad laughed along with the rest of us about it.

Dubhaltach, I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather [at least] and I'm from Irish/Scottish true CELTIC stock myself. And I know of the extremely eminent, Irish scholar with whom you share your name - so please be a bit more scholarly yourself.

We are FRIENDS of your dad. Please do a bit more 'homework' before charging in like a bull in a china shop.

OK Dubhaltach - can't we get along now? I hope your Dad considers us as his friends - I love logging onto This Old Brit. Richard has a great team here - lots of global bantering etc., and we hope you will keep your Dad up to date on our banter. I know you can't tell us where he is but we all want him to be safe. If I can be of any moral support to you and your family in your Dad's absence let me know at graniab@aol.com. Can he receive care packages? I mean what I said in a previous post Mick-In-Trouble is a powerful link. Goodnight kiddo !

Anyone remember the old "Domino theory" of the late 60's? You know, the one that they tried to use to justify the Vietnam War? I'm beginning to get the awful feeling that Bush might be playing that sick game for real in the Middle East... first Iraq... then Syria... then Iran... then maybe Turkey, who knows? In any case with the whole area in chaos and America more or less in control of the mid east oil... see where I'm going?

Makes you want to vomit doesn't it?

HEY DAMNIT! If there is ANY personal insulting or insulting joke making it will come from ME, GOT IT?? And if there is any personal flaming to do here I'LL DO IT! It's my job you see!

Now that we have that cleared up, let me just add as as a vet and a person who once held a job that if I told you any more about it (even though you've seen it all revealed on CBS and in almost every spy movie made since 1981) I'd have to kill myself and you (and that's not easy!), that I wish our young poster's father the very best and pray that Herne strengthen his arm in the days to come and Heartha shield him and bring him home safely.

Dubhaltach, may you and your family always enjoy the ancient Celtic blessings of flaggs, flax and fodder.

Bright blessings!
