SIRNAK, Turkey - Dozens of Turkish military vehicles loaded with soldiers and heavy weapons rumbled toward the Iraq border on Monday after an ambush by guerrilla Kurds that left eight soldiers missing and killed 12.(snip)
Iraq's president said the rebels would announce a cease-fire later in the day.(snip)
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a telephone conversation on Sunday night that Turkey expected "speedy steps from the U.S." in cracking down on Kurdish rebels and that Rice, who called the Turkish leader, asked "for a few days" from him.
[US State Department spokesman. Sean] McCormack did not dispute the account of the conversation but declined to comment on what Rice had meant by asking for "a few days."
And we'd strongly suggest bookmarking this link if you seriously want to stay abreast of the Turkish 'situation'.
Then last but by no means least, treat yourself to a (totally free), trip to The Internet Public Library - Newspaper reading room - Turkish section.

Hi Richard this is the link to Newsnow's Turkey newscrawl - (it's the one we use) between that and Yahoo a lot of territory can be covered. The Financial Times did great coverage of the Turkish election- very handy recent history for people who want to get an idea of the politics.
You know ... I'm no expert on Turkey ... but something stinks here. There's some kind of set up.
America NEEDS Turkey ... so badly that they do NOT want Turkey EVER to be accepted into the EU.
But America also NEEDS the EU ...
America also NEEDS the Kurdish terrorists PKK ....
Like I said, I'm no expert ... but when something smells to high heaven who NEEDS to be an expert to smell the stench?
I'll stake my life that there's SOME sort of set up going on here ... set up by the US ... and maybe Israel
I wish I WAS an expert.
Thanks for the links, I'm watching this Turkey news with a jaundiced eye, preparing for the inevitable bush war expansion on all fronts. Wouldn't surprise me if Turkey coming down from the north works out nicely with US pushing toward Iran. So little time left (15-mos), so much damage still to be done.
