Yesh Din, Israel, Palestinians and Kangaroo Military Courts ...

*
Oy, vey!

Guilty, schmilty, blah-blah, whatever.

Hands up who knew the Israeli military regularly hold kangaroo courts for Palestinians.

JERUSALEM - Israel's military court system for Palestinian suspects in the West Bank produces almost automatic convictions, an Israeli human rights group charged Sunday.

The group, Yesh Din, עברית عربية ...
... said in a new report that in 2006 more than 99.7 percent of those accused were convicted, 95 percent in plea bargains.

Yesh Din said its inquiry, which included attending more than 800 hearings and conducting extensive interviews with lawyers and court staff, concluded that suspects were often unable to present a full defense with effective counsel.

(snip)

The Yesh Din report said, however, that military court proceedings can be startlingly brief, citing a study of 38 hearings where prosecutors sought to extend suspects' detention in custody until the end of case, which generally means remand for a year or more.

Of those 38 hearings, Yesh Din says, seven lasted between two and four minutes, 19 lasted between one and two minutes and 12 were over in less than a minute.

(snip)

Hearings were held in Hebrew and simultaneous translation into Arabic was mainly carried out by conscript soldiers rather than professional interpreters, with the result that suspects, and their attorneys, often did not understand the charges.

"Most are detained in Israel and their attorneys are not able to meet them," said Michael Sfard, Yesh Din's legal counsel. In addition, minors were often tried as adults and detained at length before being charged.

So, who was it who said "Shalom" ?

I've long maintained there is little difference between the attitude of Israel towards the Palestinians, and that of the German Third Reich towards European Jews. I believe the only reason Israel doesn't solve their Palestinian problem in a similar manner, by mass extermination, is because they are aware the world wouldn't stand for it. These may sound harsh words, but there are many, many Israelis (not all) who view the Palestinians as sub-human vermin and wish them gone by any means.

One of my friends is a refugee Palestinian here - and she tells me, interestingly enough, most Palestinians - in Canada anyway - remain anonymous in the new land. Commonly, they say they are from Greece and only reveal themselves when trust is established, often taking years and years.
Her stories of camps (she was a child) and phony trials and massacres (by no less than Ariel Sharon)are horrific. And I think the situation is far far worse than MSM are telling us.

Richard, while it's [semi] ok to openly criticise some of the inexcusable actions of our own Brit miltary and government, it's less acceptable to to do the same where the US is concerned ~ but almost tantamount to commiting a crime oneself where Israeli governments and IDF troops are involved.

Of course I'm certain I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

What's to be done ~ by whom? I think we all know in our heart of hearts [from years of experience] that the answers are "nothing" and "nobody".

As an aside, it's comical\ironical\etc\whatever that Bush is staying in the King David Hotel ~ where even all those years ago Israeli terrorists [the Stern Gang] including future Israeli prime minister [Begin] was bombing that place and murdering and maiming civilians ~ mainly Brits.

There is an excellent article over at:

http://www.sott.net/

on why a 'two-state' system would be unworkable. When you look at the map, and see just how the Palestinian lands have shrunk, you will understand why.
