Really! What the hell is going on in this crazy world of ours???

Why is religion being used by politicians (around the world) in such a manipulative ways? I thought religion was a sipiritual act, between men and god? Why are politicians in between church/mosque/temple and the individual?

Could it be because, religion is a great tool to control the masses?

It's easy to forget that in spite of all their technological advances, the American mindset in the main has changed little since the days of founding fathers ... who were (like it or not) basically, misfit fundamentalist religious zealots.

pimpernel--

The US has gone through several periods of fundamentalist revival, starting but the American Revolution occurred during one of our more secular periods.

Most of the people who are generally referred to as "founding fathers" were influenced to a great extent by the Enlightenment. Partly because they had just rebelled against a theocracy, and partly because the US had gone through a fundamentalist revival just a generation before, these founding fathers ensured the secular nature of the American government by including several anti-theocratic provisions in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As for Obama, it's not surprising to see him invoking Jesus so often, as he's always worn his religion on his sleeve as part of his political persona. The main difference between him and Bush on that score is that Obama invokes a God of inclusion and mercy, which is why holy rollers like Tony Perkins hate him.

Also, Obama doesn't use religion in an attempt to justify wars of aggression and torture.
